Retirement Reflections of a Teacher’s

teacher appreciation weekClara Thompson had for a long time planned that during her retirement, she would be able to travel around, do lots of interesting things and most importantly, spend enough time with her loved ones. Having worked for thirty-five years as a committed teacher, she felt it was the right moment to put down her chalk and embrace freedom. it was the last teacher appreciation week for her. Nonetheless, as she approached the last day in Riverside High, a strange feeling hit Clara; was it excitement or fear?

A lot of students turned up to the farewell to say thank you for everything they had learned from her. The students recounted the ways in which they drew motivation from Clara; this made them love writing & think well too. An intense feeling of pride mixed with sorrow swept over Clara as she observed her surroundings. For her, the classroom was more than just an academic space; it was a place that allowed her to mold individuals who would cross her path for life.

Clara wandered in the empty school halls after the party, memories flowing like a river. Passing by her classroom she remembered all the hours spent working on lesson plans & marking student’s work. The walls were now dead silent but they used to speak through the children’s art. This was the kind of goodbye that left her feeling both happy and sad.

Back at home, Clara made efforts to adopt the new schedule that she had put in place. She engaged in some activities such as knitting, went back to gardening, and was able to join a book club. Nevertheless she could not shake off the feeling. Before long days turned into weeks & she realized that she missed being a teacher.
The lively discussions and young students’ spirits seemed to be surrounding her everywhere!.

On a rainy day, Clara was going through some old photos when she came across some pictures that reminded her of all the good times she had with her students like their projects, school trips and graduations. Every picture had a sentimental value & could take her back to those days when she was still teaching and loving it all. This made her decide to go back to teaching.

Having organized a reunion at a nearby coffee shop with some of her past students, she was pleased to see that a lot of them turned up. The event turned out to be exciting as they shared on what has been happening in their lives since they left school. The conversation revolved around what they had been doing with themselves including their careers, families, and the impact of Clara’s teachings on them. On that particular evening, for the first time in months, Clara felt fulfilled.

Clara was inspired by the reuniting of friends and family to start offering tutoring services for underperforming kids at the local community outreach. This reignited her teaching passion as she came to understand that there was more to her profession even in retirement. She could still foster education & give knowledge to a few who crossed her path.

Clara embraced her new identity with time. Gardening, painting and even hiking in the company of some of her friends from the book club were now her sources of happiness. She had new experiences every day and she started to look at retirement in a different way; for her it was only the beginning of something else not the end of everything.

Clara was taking a walk in the nearby park on one fresh morning of the fall when she saw a bunch of kids playing around. The sound of their laughter enveloped the atmosphere, and she experienced the usual comfort deep inside her. As she thought about how she had been able to follow through with her plans for so long, return to what she loved, and still have impact, it made her smile.

While Clara stood there, she comprehended that even though the doors of the classroom were close; her teaching spirit was not imprisoned but free. The teaching spirit is & will forever be about inspiring others in various ways.

Clara acknowledges the importance of balance in life. The fact that she is no longer teaching has made her understand that she is not without a purpose; rather, she has been able to redefine it. When she looks outside into the fresh autumn day, she is filled with thankfulness at the prospect of what is coming, and knows that she is now starting something very important in her life.

Clara’s story takes place for about half a year starting with a goodbye party held on the last days of May 2023 & ending with some reflections she made in November 2023. In this period, she was trying to get used to not working; met with her old students again but continued developing herself by helping in charities & remembering who she was.
